Post Doctoral Researcher
My research interests are in marine ecosystem ecology, especially different how disturbances and pressures impact the ecosystems’ structures and functions. In my Masters’ thesis research, I studied trophic interactions in a coral reef setting in the Florida Keys. For my PhD research, I studied on the various interactions of aquatic non-indigenous species in the Baltic Sea coastal food webs. Since my PhD I have been working on ecosystem modelling for the coastal systems in the Baltic Sea, especially Archipelago Sea (Northern Baltic Sea), utilizing Ecopath with Ecosim and Eco-space (EwE) approach. These models can be used in a variety of settings, including ecosystem-based fisheries’ management. I am also using a variety of methods to highlight complex interactions in marine ecosystems and developing decision support tools (e.g., Bayesian networks) to aid decision makers in sustainable use of marine resources.
I am co-chairing the Joint HELCOM/ICES Working Group on Integrated Assessments of the Baltic Sea (WGIAB) where I have an opportunity to use my expertise to advance practical ecosystem based fisheries’ management.
Current Research:
My Post Doctoral project, «Identifying changes in coastal ecosystems – implications to recovery trajectories» is my main focus. Within the project, I am using my Archipelago Sea EwE model to answer questions about resiliency and factors that impact it.
I am also contributing to European projects GES4SEAS and SEADITO as well as few smaller national projects (e.g. MIMOSA). Within GES4SEAS, I’m mostly involved in modelling related tasks and in SEADITO we are developing socioeconomic models to support the Digital Twin (EDITO). MIMOSA aims to add estimates of phytoplankton adaptation into a biogeochemical model and future predictions.
