The OceanNexus project aims to improve our understanding and prediction of how climate change can trigger abrupt transitions and extreme events in the ocean, and how these changes affect marine ecosystems and human societies.
The project will investigate short-, medium- and long-term changes in ocean systems under extreme climate variability, including potential tipping points and cascading effects. By combining Earth System Models, ecosystem models and socioecological approaches, OceanNexus will assess how physical changes in the ocean translate into ecological and societal impacts and responses.
Research will focus on five European case studies: the North Atlantic, Baltic Sea, Bay of Biscay, Northwestern Mediterranean and Ebro Delta. The project will develop innovative statistical and AI-based tools to identify early warning signals, support risk assessment and inform adaptive governance and policy.
